so try installing mjpegtools & mencoder (686 if using > PII)
# aptitude install mjpegtools

Additions:
Following was tested on edubuntu 6.06
Run kino and start capture if you get the error
kernel module dv1394 not loaded

you need to change Kino's IEEE1394 capture device
When you try to save MPEG files you may get the error
Error writing to KINO/MJPEG audio filter - aborting

so try installing mencoder instead


Deletions:
If you are using edubuntu 6.06 you must run kino and change its IEEE1394 capture device
To save MPEG files you need to install mencoder
